US-212, the Beartooth Highway, is a designated All-American Road that climbs to 10,947 feet at Beartooth Pass on its run between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City near Yellowstone's northeast entrance. Often called one of the most beautiful drives in America, it crosses a vast alpine plateau of tundra, glacial lakes, and snowfields above the tree line, with switchbacks visible from miles away. The road opens only from late spring into early fall.
