Wyoming's Black Hills Scenic Byway runs 78 miles on US Highway 85 from Newcastle to Sundance, tracing the western edge of the Black Hills. For much of its length the road cuts through sparsely populated ranchland, with forested hills rising on one side and open views over the Powder River Basin on the other. The Cheyenne held this country for generations before the Lakota Sioux took control around 1776, after which the Black Hills became central to Lakota culture and spiritual life. Later gold strikes drew miners whose ghost towns and mining-era relics still dot the route, a quieter, less-told counterpart to the gold rush history of nearby Deadwood and Lead. The byway ends at Sundance, the small Western town that gave outlaw Harry Longabaugh his nickname, the Sundance Kid, after he served jail time there in the 1880s. From Sundance, travelers continue on to Devils Tower National Monument, making this byway the quiet approach road to one of Wyoming's most recognizable landmarks.
