US-16 crosses the southern Bighorn Mountains over Powder River Pass at 9,666 feet, beneath Cloud Peak, the range's glacier-cradling high point. Heading west the road drops through the red-walled Ten Sleep Canyon, a popular rock-climbing gorge. The skyway links the plains around Buffalo with the Bighorn Basin.
