Wyoming's 20-mile share of the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway carries US Highway 150 from the Utah state line to Evanston. It's the tail end of a 78-mile route starting in Kamas, Utah, and crosses the Uinta Mountains, one of the few ranges in North America that runs east to west. Cars first began driving up to Mirror Lake from the Utah side in 1925, but the road wasn't extended through to Evanston until 1942. On the Wyoming stretch, the Bear River Ranger Station offers a scenic stop with picnic tables and a restored tie-hack cabin, a reminder of the hand-hewn railroad-tie logging that once drove the local economy. Both Wyoming and Utah have designated the full corridor a State Scenic Byway. Like the rest of the route, the Wyoming section is seasonal, closed by heavy snow from roughly mid-fall to mid-May, and rewards summer drivers with overlooks, lakes, and campgrounds along the Uintas' forested western flank.
